Permaculture in New Zealand proudly presents:
The Permaculture Annual Hui – Queen’s birthday weekend
Saturday May 30th – Monday June 1st, 2009
Tu Teao marae, Te Teko, Bay of Plenty
Titiro ki mua
Whakaorangia nga taonga
Mo nga whakatipuranga
Look to the future’s past
Revive the treasures
For future growth
Come be part of history.
Come celebrate over 30 years of permaculture in New Zealand.
Come immerse yourself in tikanga Maori and kaupapa permaculture.
This year’s hui will be our first ever marae based Annual Hui and a milestone in grassroots bicultural
empowerment and partnership. Maori from all over Aotearoa who are active in
permaculture will be attending with their various expressions of tino rangatiratanga. We
warmly welcome many people new or unfamiliar with permaculture, yet who are skilled and
active in their own communities, to join the conversation about building a truly sustainable
nation.
Hui activities will include making and eating hangi, Tuteao marae design competition,
raranga / weaving, building a Roundhouse, kapa haka, Tuteao marae permablitz, making a cob
oven, Permaculture Diploma presentations, site visits and much much more. Lots of laughter
and entertainment guaranteed.
We are thrilled to announce that David Holmgren and Haikai Tane, the founders of the
permaculture movement here in Aotearoa, will be our keynote speakers at this year’s Annual
Hui. David in 1978, along with Bill Mollison, published Permaculture One becoming the cofounder
of the permaculture concept. David has been actively involved in ecological design
ever since, publishing and educating about permaculture theory and practice. Haikai is a
geographer, ecologist, planner and founding Director of Tai ji Dao Watershed Foundation in
Twizel, Paio-te-koko, Mahunui. He runs a field research station auditing and implementing
projects for sustainable development and environmental protection (UN Agenda 21). Haikai
convened Permaculture NZ in 1978 and co-hosted the first NZ permaculture workshops with
David in March 1979. We will use this occasion to celebrate over 30 years of permaculture
education, advocacy and activism in Aotearoa NZ and look at new opportunities and horizons
in which to sail permaculture into the future.
This event will use Open Space Technology (OST) to organise workshops, networking and
project development opportunities. Some of the workshops already on offer include rongoa
Maori (traditional Maori herbal medicine), Transition Culture (Towns / Iwi / etc.), local food
security, permaculture schools, and project funding.
As per custom, on Monday morning we will hold the PiNZ Annual General Meeting. At our AGM,
after 30 years of permaculture in this land, we will evaluate how far we have come, identify
where we want to steer the permaculture waka for the coming year and offer feedback, share
ideas, create a shared vision and design an action plan to move this country forward. Help
shape the direction of ecological design, active citizenship, Transition Culture, community
resilience and cultural regeneration in Aotearoa today.
Everyone is welcome!!! We look forward to seeing you there!!!
Fees for this year’s hui include marae accommodation and all meals from Saturday lunch to
Monday lunch. PiNZ Members $120 – $200 Non-members $170 – $200
Please note that paying at the higher end of scale assists others to attend. Thank you.

Warren Snow of Envision will be speaking at the Grey Lynn 2030 meeting.
Warren wants to propose a new vision for reducing waste in Auckland. This will be partly based on a report Envision did in 2005 entitled “Reclaiming Auckland’s Resources”
That report proposed a waste strategy for Auckland based around a network of 7 Large Resource Recovery Parks fed by around 60 community recycling centres. All of Auckland’s waste resources would flow to sites within the network and only the residual material that cannot be reused or recycled would go to landfill. Control of Auckland’s waste stream would be in public hands for public benefit rather than controlled by large waste companies for private benefit.
The system would be self funding and create initially hundreds and potentially thousands of new jobs for the Auckland region.
About Warren
Warren started his first business in Tauranga at 19, producing signage, screen printing and point of sale display material for clients throughout New Zealand. He became disenchanted with advertising’s role in promoting consumerism (as well as addictive substances such cigarettes, alcohol and oil) and moved to Kaitaia.
As a result of economic restructuring in the 1980s he became involved in community development, and in 1989 co-founded CBEC (Community Business and Environment Centre) in Kaitaia and helped establish the Far North’s recycling system. In 1994 he project managed the introduction of Auckland City’s kerbside recycling system, then managed the Tindall Foundation for five years. In 1997 he co-founded Zero Waste New Zealand Trust, and helped establish the Recycling Operators of New Zealand (RONZ) and Waste Not Auckland Trust.
Warren served on the government-appointed Waste Minimisation Working Party which provided advice on the 2002 New Zealand Waste Strategy.
He established Envision in 2000.http://envision-nz.com/

NEW DIGS: Grey Lynn community constable Natalie Lyons is now based at the Grey Lynn Community Centre.
Grey Lynn residents wanting to have a chat with their community constable can find her in a more central spot.
Constable Natalie Lyons recently moved to an office at the Grey Lynn Community Centre on Richmond Rd to be more accessible to the public.
She was previously based in a shopping complex on Surrey Cres and says people found the office difficult to find.
“It makes sense for a community constable to be based in a community centre. This is really good, a lot of people come through the centre.”
Being on a main road the centre attracts a lot of foot traffic and people know where it is, says Ms Lyons.
Recent problems facing the area include a spate of burglaries and thefts from cars.
Ms Lyons says she is trying to get Neighbourhood Support groups set up to encourage people to look out for one other.
She has been the Grey Lynn community constable for three years and loves the job.
It allows her to do proactive work rather than reactive and she can get to know the community instead of just passing through.
Ms Lyons will be at the office until July when she will go on maternity leave and a replacement will be arranged.
The office is open from 9am to noon on weekdays except Wednesdays when it is open from 2pm.
Ms Lyons can be contacted on 360-0796.
