Shout and Never Get Tired!

‘HALLELUJAH’- Jubilation has put out a CD. Many of the members of Jubilation Gospel Choir  live in Grey Lynn

Jubliation Choir presents FOUR CORNERS– CD Release Tour

How do you celebrate your tenth birthday? Release a CD and throw a party -
or make that four parties. Gospel group JUBILATION are doing four gigs Auckland-wide to celebrate the release of their first CD, SHOUT & NEVER GET TIRED.

Jubilation originals like Rick Bryant’s ‘Learn To Forgive’ and Jean McAllister’s ‘First To Come Home’ mix it with Tom Waits, Isaac Hayes and Don McGlashan classics – the songs hail from the 1840s right through to the 21st century. What they have in common is soul, and they come alive with the Jubilation a capella treatment – no instruments, just the naked human voice.

The Four Corners tour is a celebration of Auckland as well as a CD launch – singing at four very different locations around Auckland brings the different parts of the city together in harmony. Gigs in Mangere, Titrangi, Devonport and the central city mean that South Auckland, the West, the North Shore and the CBD all get a taste, while the Eastern Suburbs play their part with the recording studio for the CD being St. Lukes in deepest Remuera. Having sung in front of large audiences around the country with standing-ovation performances at WOMAD, the Tauranga and Taupo Arts Festivals, the Festival of Colour in Wanaka and the Wellington Jazz festival, now is the time for Jubilation to bring it home.

Pulling together 33 singers from all walks of life, Jubilation features a handful of New Zealand’s most outstanding and celebrated vocalists. Rick Bryant, founding member of Mammal, the Jive Bombers, The Neighbours and the Windy City Strugglers, is an R & B legend on the local scene. Jackie Clarke of When The Cat’s Been Spayed, the Ladykillers and The Darlings, Callie Blood of the Darlings and Jean McAllister of David Lange’s favourite band The Drongoes also bring their fabulous voices to the party.  Other well-known names in the choir are actors Jennifer Ward Lealand and Amanda Billing and writer/director Fiona Samuel, but most of Jubilation’s singers moonlight as builders, political analysts, electricians, teachers, nurses… There’s also a boat builder and a postie.

The group’s repertoire is similarly eclectic – from the soul and R & B style gospel of ‘People Get Ready’ and ‘Operator’ through the alt/country sound of ‘Bright Morning Star’ and ‘Wayfaring Stranger’ all the way to the glorious kiwi gospel of Don McGlashan’s  ‘Bathe In The River’. Jubilation sang the backing vocals for Hollie Smith’s stunning version of this song which graced the ‘Number Two’ film soundtrack and won the APRA Silver Scroll for best song in 2006.

The release of SHOUT & NEVER GET TIRED is a milestone in Jubilation’s ten year history, and the Four Corners tour is a great chance to hear the choir that METRO described as one of the reasons to be proud you live in Auckland.

I hope you will support them. Here is a little more about The Little Grocer from the owner Alia de Jaltasyrras.

“The Little Grocer provides a seasonal deli menu of breakfast, lunch and dinner fare.

  • Wild Wheat supplies us with fantastic sourdough breads and we make a range of pesto, hummus and tapenades.
  • We also sell carefully selected fresh fruit and veges and stock organic Coromandel produce when available.
  • Our vegan chef creates delightful sweets that are not only vegan but also gluten free and we always have vegan and gluten free savoury options available for those with specific dietary needs.
  • For the sweet toothed amongst us, Super Sweet Sunday is our baking day when we fill the shop with delightful baked goods.

Wilton St Community Garden Fence is Finished!

The Wilton St Community Garden Fence is now completed and it looks stunning!
A fence was badly needed for the community garden as people were still parking on the land. The garden is immediately behind the Gypsy Tea Rooms so on a busy night some vacant land looked tempting. Also the land had become a popular dog toilet… yuck.
Urgent action was required as this is all very disheartening for the gardeners.

So a builder was found, materials donated (thanks to The Wine Vault) and work commenced.
The marvellous builders also repaired trellis and hung gate.  The builder, Murray Watt has done a lovely job. Please recommend him to your friends.
Grey Lynn 2030 have funded the labour for the fence from the money we made from our “Age of Stupid”  movie night. The rest of the money has been used for the banner and signage we are using at the Farmers Market and other events.
The new picket fence

Also local shops Monterey and Savour and Devour are now keen to donate their kitchen waste to the Wilton St Community Garden.

Depending on how much they produce our next job will be to expand our composting system.
Anyone able to do any watering please do so especially those living in wilton street as the new plants will appreciate it.

Please call in and see the garden or even better come along to our working bee on Sundays 2-4. Every weekend.

GLFM coffee provider Kokako wins at Sustainable Business Awards

Kokako Organic win at Sustainable Business Network Awards

Kokako Organic, who provide the (essential …) coffee at the Grey Lynn Famers Market  have been recognised as an innovative trailblazer in sustainable business in New Zealand in this year’s northern regional Sustainable Business Network Awards.

Kokako Logo

Kokako have are also kindly sponsoring our Food Inc movie night with their delicious nibbles before the movie begins.

Judges described Kokako Organic as a dynamic company that ticks all of the boxes in terms of social and environmental sustainability coupled with savvy business planning.

Kokako Organic runs a popular Auckland café in Parnell (not too far from Grey Lynn) and produces a distinctly Kiwi range of fairtrade organic coffee and quality food products in its Eden Terrace roastery and kitchen. The Kokako 100% certified fairtrade and organic coffee, purely indulgent hot chocolate and Grab & Go range of salads, bakes and slices are available at some of the country’s best specialty food stores.

As this year’s winner of the Trailblazer Small and Medium business category, Kokako was commended for its responsible business practices that extend beyond its own practices to influencing and educating its customers and suppliers to do the same thing.

Kokako’s Mike Murphy says he is delighted that the company has been recognised as a leader in the field of sustainable business.

“We set out to create a business with absolute integrity and passion for sustainability in everything we do,” says Mike. “We believe it’s really important for businesses such as ours to tell the story of where their food comes from and to work with suppliers to develop more sustainable solutions. Our 100% biodegradable coffee bags made from sustainably sourced wood pulp are a great example of this.”

Regional manager of the Sustainable Business Network’s northern office, David Clendon is delighted with the achievements of these businesses that are going the extra mile to incorporate organic sustainability into their daily life.

“It’s encouraging to see businesses such as Kokako Organic taking leadership positions in the sustainability space by providing the community with organic solutions.”

“These organisations are proof that a holistic approach is not only good for the environment, but it’s good for the bottom line as well. And, they also prove that opportunities do exist for those companies that are open to adapting and innovating, even in these tough economic times,” says David.

Kokako is now a finalist in the 2009 NZI National Sustainable Business Network Awards, to be held in Auckland on Thursday, November 12.

Go Kokako! Best of luck to you and thanks for supporting our community group.

Unitec hosts Forum for the Future on the New Zealand Economy

Unitec hosts Forum for the Future on the New Zealand Economy

Award winning business journalist and adjunct Professor at Unitec’s Department of Management and Marketing, Rod Oram will lead a series of panel discussions on the future of the New Zealand economy at Unitec during October.

The three-evening series is the inaugural programme in The Unitec Forum for the Future which has been established to help stimulate discussion about New Zealand’s opportunities and challenges in the global economy.

Rod Oram and his colleagues at Unitec’s Department of Management and Marketing have identified a range of major topics for the Forum. Each topic will be tackled in a series of three 90-minute panel-style discussions bringing together sector leaders, academics, students and the public.

The first series will run October 8, 15 and 22 from 6.30pm- 8.00pm at Unitec’s Mount Albert campus in Auckland. It will examine the National-led government’s goal of having the New Zealand economy catch up with Australia’s by 2025. It has formed a task force, led by Don Brash, the former Reserve Bank Governor and National party leader, to advise it. The Unitec Forum for the Future will stimulate thinking on how the goal can be reached.

The October 8 session will consider the 2025 challenge – how big is the task and how will we do it? The two guest speakers will be Dr Rick Boven, director of the New Zealand Institute, and David Caygill, a member of the 2025 taskforce, chairman of the Electricity Commission and a former Labour cabinet minister.

The October 15 session will consider the Dairy sector’s strategic response; and the October 22 session will explore the Tourism sector’s strategic response.

Associate Professor and Head of Unitec’s Department of Management and Marketing, Robert Davis says, “The Forum is a great opportunity for our students, guests and the live audience to engage in a broader discussion about the role of enterprise in wider New Zealand society.”

“Each programme will be filmed and edited for the web by students from Unitec’s Department of Screen and Performing Arts and made available on the Unitec website and a dedicated blog to allow for wider debate on the issues,” says Davis.

The Unitec Forum for the Future plans to run at least two such programmes a year.

For further information or interviews with Rod Oram or Robert Davis please contact: Andrea Rush on email: andrea@360 connect.co.nz, DDI 09 918-7712 or mobile 021 962 349

Still time to see Sirocco!

To celebrate Conservation Week this year – and all of those people (many of you!) who ‘get involved’, DOC and Auckland Zoo are hosting a very special guest to help tell the story of kakapo conservation in NZ and the incredible work of the Kakapo Recovery Programme (www.kakaporecovery.org.nz).

Sirocco the kakapo is one of only 124 kakapo remaining in the world. Sirocco is a very special bird, having been hand-raised as a chick due to a chest infection 12 years ago. This led to him becoming very fond of humans (more fond of them than kakapo so far!), and as such, Sirocco has become an excellent advocate for conservation in NZ.

Did you know the kakapo used to be one of NZ’s most common birds – found all over this country. Unfortunately hunting, habitat destruction and introduced predators took their toll on the kakapo -reducing their numbers to just 50 by 1995. Thanks to the commitment and dedication of the Kakapo Recovery Programme, the thousands of volunteers, scientists, rangers, vets and sponsors – kakapo are now back over 100. This year, beyond all expectations, 33 chicks survived (26 of whom were captive-raised in Invercargill!), and six years from now when these birds start to breed – it may give these amazing birds just the boost they need to thrive again one day.

Sirocco will be visiting Auckland Zoo from September 14th-23rd to help celebrate Conservation Week and tell the story of one of our greatest conservation challenges. We’d LOVE to see you there. For more info and ticket bookings, please visit www.aucklandzoo.co.nz/kakapo and www.conservationweek.org.nz

A encounter with a kakapo is a unique experience – especially a hard-case one like Sirocco – he even has his own Facebook page! Make a difference this Conservation Week and visit Sirocco at Auckland Zoo.
