Special Edition of Grey Lynn 2030′s community news

End of September 2010
In This Special Issue:

The crazy spring weather is spurring us out of our winter slumber with plenty going on over the next few weeks.

  • voting is now underway in our first Auckland Council election
  • Equinox Spring Fling and Green Screen this weekend
  • AGM of Grey Lynn Farmers Market and Grey Lynn Business Network
  • Auckland premier of the movie Water Whisperer Tangaroa

Auckland Council – Make your vote count

The new Auckland council has been brought to us by Rodney Hide is now well underway. While we see some significant flaws it is up to us all to now make it work for our city. Plenty depends on electing people who are community focussed and will ensure our Local Boards are strong and deliver on our  local issues.

Steering Committee member Pippa Coom has been working hard for Grey Lynn 2030 over the last 18 months. We fully endorse Pippa and would love to see her elected to the Waitemata Local Board so she can further work on our sustainable vision. Pippa is the first person in NZ to run for a council who is representing the Transition Town movement. Pippa is a candidate with the City Vision team.  Earlier this month, Grey Lynn 2030 held a Meet the Candidates night for the Waitemata and Gulf Ward and Local Board. The candidates all came along  to introduce themselves and their vision to us. Many thanks to John Butters for his skillful chairing of the meeting.

Your voting papers

Your voting papers will have arrived by now. If not please call Election Services on 973 5212
Your ballot must be in the post no later than Oct 6th to be sure your vote counts.

Wilton Street Community Garden

On a wild westerly day,  Auckland Council Mayoral Candidate, Len Brown visited locals at the Grey Lynn Farmers Market. He then popped over to the Wilton St Community Garden to join the gardeners for a cup of tea. We were thrilled to be able to seat Len on our new garden furniture that was purchased from one of the final grants made by the Western Bays Community Board.

Vital Links – ethical gifts

We are impressed with the young guys behind Vital Link. They have asked us to share what they are up to. Here is their story:

The world, as it stands, needs to be changed. With environmental issues, extreme poverty for billions of people and no real action from our leaders, we as citizens of the world need to make a choice. That choice is to be sustainable, to be ethical and to make decisions using our hard-earned dollars. Remember, you have the power, the ability, to make a difference. But how can you do that?

Vital Link is a company, founded by three university students, to give people the tools to make the choices that count. Justin Scott, Sam Dalton and Medha Ghatikesh started Vital Link because they wanted to make a difference, but they realise to do that they need the world to take part. They want to promote the attitude of giving and sharing with a particular focus on sustainability and ethics.

They have taken the first step towards their goal, and have launched an application on Facebook called Vital Gifts. Vital Gifts is a tool for you to send real, sustainable, ethical gifts to your friends using Facebook. The best thing about it, is that you can share that gift with everyone. As soon as you send Joe Bloggs a gift, you can post a message on your wall, tweet, or start a conversation about that gift. What a great way to promote sustainability, by getting people to talk about your choice.

Vital Gifts will be available in NZ and Australia from 27th September. But if you want to be one of the first to try it out, register at http://vitallinkapp.com/ and show your support for the company that helps you make a difference on facebook, twitter or in person.

Green Screen Presents: the Power of Community

The Power of Community is an inspiring description of how the people of Cuba overcame the loss of most of their oil supply; how they worked together at the grassroots level to feed themselves and move forward, into a lifestyle that is probably superior to what they had before.  Run time: 53 minutes. http://www.powerofcommunity.org

Also presenting: Jungle Space

Jungle Space is a short photo essay with music made by Green-Screener, Steve Edwards who employed what he calls the ‘manky-montage-motif’ editing technique to convey a jungle vision for the urban-suburban habitats of Tämaki Makaurau. What unfolds is the story of the Jungle Spaces’ themselves – that are and could be – as told by a foot-path chalk narrator who provokes the viewer to let the light bulb go on by instigating or joining-in the transformation from ‘chit-chat’ into community-wide action. By using the asphalt as a medium for anarchistic communication, its inert functionality is altered as the chalk insights people with maths to ‘evolve’ by walking beyond their talk.

Duration 3min 40 sec. JungleSpace.tiff

Come along and join us for thought provoking viewing, discussions, and a drink.
When: Saturday 25th September, 7pm
Where: Grey Lynn Community Centre, 510 Richmond Road
Entry: $2

Coming up for October Green Screen: Fierce Light on Saturday 30th October at 7pm

An invite to a Spring Fling

It’s September Spring Fling time!

An equinox ritual to celebrate the return of spring.

The drummers will lead us in a dance as we acknowledge the passing of winter and look forward to new life.
We will gather in the church to the call of the drums and then follow them outside as they lead us around the garden.

Bring food to share for a picnic brunch.

Spring is here and it is time to wake up the worms again and celebrate the cycles of life!
Come and join this community celebration.

Waste Away News
BYO Coffee Cup
It is estimated that 100 million disposable coffee cups go to landfill each year in New Zealand, where they take years to biodegrade. Laid end to end these would stretch from Cape Reinga to Bluff almost 7 times!  Taking your own, reusable cup to a café to fill with your favourite beverage is an easy step you can take to help reduce this phenomenal amount of waste.

Some disturbing facts about disposable paper coffee cups:

  • They are lined with a plastic coating to prevent leakage.
  • This plastic lining prevents the cup from being composted or recycled and slows down decomposition in landfill.
  • Large amounts of trees, energy and water are required for their production.
  • As they decompose in anaerobic conditions in a landfill, a leachate of methane gas is produced, a powerful greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming.

The production of a reusable cup is more resource intensive than the production of a paper cup, however the impact lessens over time as the cup is reused. A study conducted by Sustainability Engineer, Pablo Päster showed that the breakeven point of a stainless steel cup (i.e. the point where it becomes more environmentally friendly than a paper cup) is after 24 uses.
As most reusable cups are designed to last for 3000 uses, there is a positive environmental impact to using reusable cups over paper cups.

The GL2030 Waste Away Group has surveyed the cafes in Grey Lynn, who are all very supportive of customers bringing in their own reusable cups to be filled.  We have also compiled a list of cafes where you can buy Keep Cups, a reusable, recyclable cup made of #5 plastic. We are also selling these at the Waste Away stall at our local Grey Lynn Farmer’s Market, (Community Centre, Sunday, except the last of the month).  To further spread the word in our community, we will be running stands at our local cafes with information on reusable cups.

We estimate the number of disposable coffee cups used in our local Grey Lynn area per year laid end to end would stretch 32 times along Williamson Ave so please help reduce our community’s impact on waste to landfill by taking your own reusable cup along to the café for your coffee.

Local Cafes selling Keep Cups:

  • Coffee Supreme, 42 Douglas Street
  • Sliced Lunch Bar, 104 Richmond Road
  • Mello Café, 166 Richmond Road
  • Ripe Deli, 172 Richmond Road
  • The Little Grocer, 311 Richmond Road
  • Savour & Devour, 478 Richmond Road
  • Meola Kitchen, 184 Garnet Road
  • Pyrenees Deli, 756 New North Road (Rocket Park)

Wilton Street Community Garden
Spring is here and we are gearing up to plant summer vegetable crops. Compost has been turned and is doing brilliantly – some has already been turned out for the summer spuds. Everyday locals are delivering compost to the site from as far away as Pt Chev.

We have started the construction and planting of our new lizard garden using the money given to us by the Western Bays Community Board.   While its not yet finished it is already looking great.  A few skinks have been seen around the site so we hope when its finished they will move in and live there safely amongst the rocks and plants.  Some of the plants chosen for the garden are pollinated by lizards.

Cats are one of the worst predators for native lizards and are a particular problem in the garden. We have investigated the use of a NZ-made sonic alarm – cat repellent, however it turns out to be unsuitable as lizards are very sensitive to noise and would be disturbed by it as well as the cats.

If anyone has any bright ideas about keeping cats off the site please let us know.

New gardeners would be welcome – with spring here there’s much to do
