Grey Lynn Creates

A week-long festival of artistic, cultural, culinary and environmental events. Celebrating creativity and sustainability in our community.

Grey Lynn Shout for Samoa

Grey Lynn has adopted Manu Samoa as their second team for the Rugby World Cup.  With the support of the local community, schools and churches the Grey Lynn Business Association would like to welcome Manu Samoa to New Zealand and to celebrate their involvement in RWC 2011.

The following FREE family friendly events have been organised to welcome the Manu Samoa team, celebrate our community and to showcase Grey Lynn to the world.

GREY LYNN STREET PARTY
Thursday 22 September, 4.30pm-8pm
Grey Lynn Shops, Great North Road
A celebration of  Samoan culture including music, dance, craft, Samoan language and a variety of Grey Lynn flavoured stalls.

SAVALIVALI (HERITAGE WALK)
Saturday 24 September, 12pm-3pm
Meet at Joseph’s Catholic Church, Great North Road for the start of a Savalivali (heritage walk) led by Grey Lynn historian Sofi Pua and other local legends.  Be introduced to the rich cultural and artistic history of Grey Lynn, and its strong pacific roots.  

WEST LYNN STREET PARTY
Thursday 29 September, 4pm-8pm
West Lynn Shops, Richmond Road
An evening of culinary and creative delights, with stalls by local businesses and community groups. Music , dance and performance art. Local shops open late.  

COMMUNITY FESTIVAL
Saturday 1 October, 12.30pm-6pm
St Joseph’s Catholic School, Great North Road
Hosted by St Joseph’s Catholic School, the Community Festival will be a fun celebration of our neighbourhood and its people and will showcase our food, arts and craft, music and performers.  Bring your children for a fun community event.

4 September Spring Planting Workshop

As the weather warms up, it’s time to get your seedlings in the ground for ready for the spring and summer harvest. Murray and Rob from Heirloom Organix will cover everything you need to know about spring planting, as well as answer any questions you may have, from what plants to choose, when and how to plant them and how to protect them from pests.

 11 September Cooking “Under the Pressure” Cooker

Pressure cookers save time and money, and require less power than regular cooking methods.” Local food writer and vege grower”Lisa Loveday will demonstrate how to use a pressure cooker easily and safely to

prepare soups, bean dishes, casseroles and other one pot meals. Her book will be for sale on the day for $30 (normally $34.99).

 18 September Sauerkraut for Everyone

Sauerkraut is alive! Discover this fantastic natural probiotic and superfood that has been a staple in European diets for centuries. Fermenting fanatics Bella Mayana will teach you how to prepare and ferment your own sauerkraut at home without any fancy ingredients or equipment.

 2 October  Grey Lynn Creates Market

The week long Grey Lynn Creates festival (www.greylynncreates.co.nz) “comes to the market for a morning of creativity and sustainability. Sand art competition, creative fun, face painting and story telling for the kids.

9 October Cheese Making at Home

Learn how to make your own cheese at home with Sue Arthur, owner & director of Over The Moon Cheese Dairy and the NZ Cheese School.”"The class will cover all you need to know for making halloumi in your own home – the basic equipment needed, hygiene requirements and cheese making process.

Cost $10 or $5 for Friends of the Market. No booking is necessary, but be on time to secure a spot.

16 October Organic Pest and Disease

Management in Home Gardens

Landscape Architect and Organic Grower Carl Pickens will discuss how to protect your garden from pests and diseases using organic methods.” Topics include companion planting, physical barriers, biological controls, soil husbandry, creating habitats for pest predators, and organic alternatives to chemical spraying.”

 23 October  Spring Festival

Come join in the biggest event on the Grey Lynn Farmers Market calendar – the Spring Festival! Special guest David Scho!eld, 2011 Chef of the Year, will be doing gourmet cooking demonstrations using fresh Farmers Market ingredients, in a travelling mobile kitchen. There will be music, entertainment, an MC and food, food and more food. Come on down and join in the fun!
