Media release: Shop windows turn into art galleries

Media Release from Grey Lynn 2030

Date: 22 September 2011

Subject: Grey Lynn Creates Festival 25 September – 2 October

Shop windows turn into art galleries

As part of Grey Lynn Creates – a week-long festival celebrating creativity and sustainability – a unique collaboration “Window Galleries” opens on Sunday pairing fifteen artists and shops to turn West Lynn into a street based art exhibition.

“The window galleries have resulted in unusual and diverse pairings between retailers and artists including Jude Graveson’s sculptural installations made out of animal gut in the window of Moa boutique, and Elizabeth McClure’s intricately carved glass wine bottles – some still wine filled – at the Wine Vault”. Says Festival Coordinator Shelley Jacobson

“Each event on the programme is being hosted by an individual or team who are committed to their creative discipline. Many of the events invite participation, such as Crafternoon Tea and The Literatti Workshop. The established West Lynn Street Party & Twilight Market features performances by the Velociteers, synchronised cycling with a twist.  Grey Lynn Creates offers the community and visitors a fantastic opportunity to have a good time and get creative.” Says Ms Jacobson

Grey Lynn Creates is a free festival, with events including workshops, tours, markets, performances and a group exhibition.

Grey Lynn Creates is part of the REAL New Zealand Festival. Visit www.greylynncreates.co.nz for full timetable and event descriptions.

Grey Lynn Community Artwork

Your ideas needed

The Grey Lynn community centre is working with Auckland Council and a local artist to develop an artwork for the wall of the car park but we need your help!

As locals, you have the best ideas about your area and we want to include those in the artwork.

What the artist needs to get going is a theme to base the artwork on. The theme needs to:

  • Represent Grey Lynn and its residents
  • Reflect the passions of the local community
  • Speak to the community
  • Make the community proud

Throughout  February 2011, we will collect ideas from the public that will determine the theme of the artwork.
Please consider what Grey Lynn means to you, your family and your local community and a theme that best represents its people and email your ideas to Tania at: office@greylynn.org.nz

Your input is much appreciated!!!

The (often) hidden art secrets of Grey Lynn

Grey Lynn 2030 June meeting was a celebration of the artistic talent in our community. A big thank you to all the artists and members of the art community who participated.

Art in the Dark

Celia, Kat and Adelle gave us a presentation on the inaugural Art in the Dark event exploring and exploding the ideas of ‘Community, Environment and Utopias’.
Under the cover of darkness, artists will address these core values while exploring the implications of mobility, night, sky and light. Art in the Dark is a collaboration between artists, businesses and community initiatives in the Grey Lynn and Ponsonby area to celebrate and foster community.

When the circus left town, we had a parade,

the band played on and floats were made.

I looked sideways as they passed,

these bits and pieces, they were the last.

We beat our chests

and cried out loud,

the Tui’s head looked dead, not proud.

I heart Grey Lynn art exhibition

It is proposed that for Grey Lynn 2030 week next year, the streets be transformed into the site of an art exhibition.

I Heart Grey Lynn

This new initiative would see local artists creating original artworks in the windows of shops across the suburb. It is envisaged that this showcase of
site-specific artwork would include both emerging and established artists, and would help establish Grey Lynn as Auckland’s creative centre.

The Exhibitions
Each shop would be teamed with an artist who would be responsible for
curating a show of their work, then returning the space to its original condition.

Publicity
A viral marketing campaign of ‘clean’ graffiti (using a water-blaster to wash our message onto pavements) will be combined with PR through Grey Lynn 2030 networks to draw attention to the event.

Expressions of Interest
I am asking for expressions of interest from shop owners to assess the viability of the project. If this is something you would like to be involved in,
please let me know.
