Ideas Worth Spreading & Doing TEDxAuckland

TEDxAKL-PosterMany of you know about the TED videos over on TED.com. For the past year or so there have been TED extension events held around the world. The first one in Auckland was held last year at Westlake Boys High School over on the North Shore.

Speakers for 2009 included Kaila Corban on climate change, Ray Avery of Medicine Mondiale, Scott Gilmour of I have a dream, Brenda Frisk on 3D multimedia technology for education and training and 7 others. It was a full day event attended by 350 people.

The TEDx format is the same as for TED. These events bring together the world’s most fascinating thinkers and doers, who are all  challenged to give the talk of their lives (in 18 minutes).

TEDx are the local TED extension events with the same format. The next event is coming up in one weeks time on Sunday 26th of Sept at Westlake Boys again.   For more details you can click on the poster image at top left on on the next link for a pdf version TEDxAKL_2010-Poster.pdf

Divya Dhar - P3 FoundationGrey Lynn 2030 members may be interested in P3 Foundation with Divya Dhar.

Divya is P3 President, a doctor and 2010’s Young New Zealander of the Year.

She is helping to make a difference in the world through her involvement with the likes of Oxfam, Global Poverty Project, HealtheX and now the P3 Foundation.

Her personal drive is to eliminate the poverty cycle here and abroad, and this vision is the fundamental ideology behind the formation of the P3 Foundation.

The P3 Foundation (P3F) was set up in 2010 to mobilise young people to break the poverty cycle. We are an organisation run by young people, working together with young people, to end global poverty.

Our vision is:

  1. To educate young people (15 to 30 yo) about poverty, and develop their skills in finding solutions.
  2. To action solutions in alleviating poverty both here in New Zealand and abroad.
  3. To mobilise individuals to advocate for a better future.

There is also another TEDx event coming up at Tuesday morning 21st September at 2am in the morning. This event is called TEDxChange and is being held at the Business School at Auckland University. Read more over here.

Next Meeting Topic: Future Communities

Come and hear Gary Marshall,

Local Landscape Architect and Urban Designer speak about
Inspirational, International City Designs -inspire the future of Grey Lynn

Gary presented this talk at Waitakere City Conference – WICI (Waitakere – Inform, Challenge, Inspire), August 2008.  The brief he was given was to ‘Present an Inspiring Account of the Future City’.

The resulting presentation pulls together a range of examples of ‘sustainable design ideas and interventions’ and includes both New Zealand and international examples.  It is in four parts – Recover, Create, Adapt, Integrate –

Here is an extract from the introduction -

Gary will be presenting a variety of projects, both real and imaged through four ‘lenses’ that are useful to understanding the nature of design in the contemporary city.

They are – Recover, Create, Adapt, and Integrate.

  • Recover – Implies the reappearance into our cultural sphere and built environment ideas and practices that have been neglected or approached with indifference in recent times;
  • Create – Looks at how human ingenuity and innovation can harness art, science, and technology to overcome some of the issues and challenges we face today;
  • Adapt – Is concerned with how we creatively respond to change, and how we can design and retrofit our cities with technologies and innovations, both old and new; and
  • Integrate – Investigates how all the pieces of the city fit together and how they interact with one another.

The presentation is very visual – Gary has about 80 slides of some pretty ‘weird and wonderful’ ideas he has come across.
