Inorganic Waste: Grey Lynn and Inner West

Grey Lynn Gears Up for Annual Inorganic Waste Collection

Grey Lynn residents, it’s time to start planning for your annual clear-out.

Auckland Council’s inorganic waste collection is a valuable service that allows households to responsibly dispose of bulky items that don’t fit into regular rubbish bins. Grey Lynn is included in the central suburbs’ collection period – registrations open in late June and collection is in July.

Inorganic waste generally refers to household items that are not organic (like food scraps or garden waste) and not recyclable through the standard kerbside collection. Think of things like old furniture, broken appliances (white goods), mattresses, and other large household goods. It’s a fantastic opportunity to get rid of those items taking up valuable space in your home or garage.

While the specific week for Grey Lynn’s inorganic collection within the central suburbs’ timeframe is yet to be announced, keep an eye out for information from Auckland Council. Flyers are delivered to mailboxes several weeks in advance, and dates will be available on the Auckland Council website. It’s wise to start thinking about what you want to dispose of now, giving you time to organise and move items.

How to Prepare for Collection Day

Once the collection dates are confirmed for Grey Lynn, here are some important steps to follow:

  • Booking is Essential: Unlike regular rubbish collection, you must book your inorganic collection with Auckland Council. You can do this online through their website or by calling them directly. Booking ensures that the collection trucks know which streets to visit.
  • Know What’s Accepted: There are specific guidelines on what can and cannot be put out for inorganic collection. Generally accepted items include furniture, appliances, and large household items. However, things like garden waste, building materials, hazardous waste (paint, chemicals), and car parts are usually not accepted. Check the Auckland Council website for a comprehensive list to avoid your items being left behind.
  • Quantity Limits: There’s a limit to the volume of inorganic waste you can put out, typically around one cubic metre per household.
  • Placement and Timing: Once you’ve booked your collection, you’ll receive information about where to place your items and when. Generally, items should be placed on the kerbside or your drive, no more than 24 hours before your scheduled collection day, and easily accessible to the collection team. Avoid obstructing footpaths or roadways.

This service plays a crucial role in keeping our community clean and preventing illegal dumping. It provides a convenient way for residents to dispose of large, unwanted items responsibly. Furthermore, Auckland Council actively works to divert reusable or repairable items collected through this service to community recycling centers and charities, promoting resource recovery and reducing landfill waste.

While the inorganic collection is a valuable service, consider these more sustainable alternatives before putting items out for collection:

  • Repair and Reuse: Could that broken appliance be fixed? Can that old piece of furniture be given a new lease on life with a bit of DIY? Repairing and reusing items is always the most environmentally friendly option. Check out the Auckland Library of Tools.
  • Selling or Donating: Items in good condition can be sold at our two flea markets,  the Grey Lynn Car Boot Market and city centre Reuse market or donated to charity shops. This gives your unwanted goods a new home and supports our community initiatives.
  • Community Recycling Centres: Wai Orea CRC is our closest community recycling centers where you can drop off a wider range of items for reuse or recycling throughout the year. The payment schedule is here.
