Grey Lynn Community Choir

History

In 2011 we started our Grey Lynn community choir. We ran for quite a few years and then sadly Philip moved back to Australia.

The choir changed its name and location and in 2025 it is now the People’s Choir .

2025 – We hope to be going again by mid 2025 at the Ellen Melville Hall in Auckland’s City Centre.

Love to sing for the pure joy of it?
We are starting a community choir for those who want to sing with others.
The only prerequisite is that you want to sing!
Come along for some fantastic, fun, uplifting singing.
Can’t read music? Never been in a choir before? Never been trained?
All fine by us!
Of course there will be no auditions.

Philip Griffin
We were very fortunate to have in our choir leader, Philip Griffin to lead and teach us.
Philip has many years of experience with choirs of all levels.

He directed the Woodford Festival Fire Event choir in Queensland with some 400 singers and lots of fire!

He founded the Western Australian Trades and Labour Council Choir, formed a women’s community choir for the South Australian Theatre Company, conducted an inclusive choir for several years in Adelaide including performances at the Adelaide International Festival.
On the other end of the spectrum he’s prepared choruses for Opera Australia, rehearsed The Western Australian Symphony Orchestra Singers, sung with the London Philharmonic Chorus and been in many classical choir concerts as soloist, conductor, or chorister.
From Scotland to Auckland, Philip has sung in choirs, conducted choirs, started choirs, arranged for choirs and looks forward to working with our local Grey Lynn Community Choir.

Ukulele Group
As well as the choir, a ukulele group ran as well. People played ukulele together before choir rehearsals. So those who were keen can go to both sessions.
Philip taught this group too. He is extremely well qualified to do so. Philip has been playing guitars, ukulele, mandolin, bass, and lots of other stringed instruments for more than 35 years. He’s taught plucked stringed instruments in all sorts of situations, from prisons to Bachelor of Music level at The Western Australian Conservatorium of Music.

The People’s Choir

May 2025 – We are currently trying to secure funding and a venue for the choir to start again.
