Own Less, Do More: Join Auckland Library of Tools 

Auckland Library of Tools has it’s AGM this Sunday, May 18th 4.00 pm.  The AGM is being held at the premises at 21 Newton Gully.

We thought this was a good time to revisit ALOT. 

The Auckland Library of Tools (ALoT) is more than just a place to borrow a drill. It’s a thriving community hub built on the principle of “own less, do more.” Grey Lynn 2030 helped ALOT by offering the structure and services of a Trust and has gone on to be a thriving organisation of its own. Since its beginnings in early 2019, this volunteer-run, non-profit organisation has been empowering people to build, share, and create in a more sustainable way by providing access to a broad range of tools and equipment.

Why clutter your home with items used only sporadically? At ALoT, you can unlock a treasure trove of over 1000 tools, from essential household kitchen items that most people only use occasionally to specialised equipment, all without the burden of ownership. This not only reduces unnecessary consumption but also fosters a culture of sharing and resourcefulness.

ALoT is run by dedicated volunteers who believe in the power of collective access. Their commitment makes this invaluable resource available to everyone. And right now, ALoT is looking for more enthusiastic individuals to join

Become a Volunteer: Lend a Hand, Gain a Lot

There’s a place for everyone at ALoT, and your skills can make a real difference. Whether you have a knack for fixing things, a flair for communication, or a passion for organising, there’s a way for you to contribute. 

Current volunteer needs include:

• Tool Librarians: Be the friendly face of ALoT. During open hours, you’ll assist members with enquiries, process loans, catalogue items, and ensure the tools are in good working order. A commitment of at least one shift every fortnight (or more) is ideal. Full training is provided, so no prior experience is necessary – just a willingness to help.
• Tool Maintenance / Repair Specialists: Got a knack for fixing things? ALoT is particularly keen to hear from volunteers who can help keep the extensive collection in top shape with maintenance and repairs.
• Marketing /Communications Support: Help spread the word about ALoT’s fantastic services through engaging content and outreach.
• General Administration /Accounts: Support the smooth running of the library with essential administrative and bookkeeping tasks.
• Volunteer Training /Coordination: Help onboard and support new volunteers, ensuring the team is well-equipped and connected.

Even if your availability doesn’t perfectly align with current open hours, ALoT encourages you to reach out. ALOT are always looking for passionate individuals and can explore flexible arrangements.
