Winter Work: Grey Lynn Weeding, Planting, Bird Counting
Late Autumn and early winter, is the perfect time for planting and weeding. Consequently there are working local bees in the next few weeks.
-
Autumn (April-May):
This is a good time as the ground is still warm and the weather is relatively mild, allowing plants to establish roots before the winter rains.
-
Winter (June-August):Aucklands’ mild winter means it is a good time to plant too as there’s plenty of moisture in the soil, and plants can get established before spring.
Wellpark Reserve
Saturday 14th June: 9.30 – 11.30
After 20 years of chipping away at it, the Wellpark Reserve is forest is now considered ecologically significant by Auckland Council.
We are lucky to be the recipients of some trees for winter planting.
Help us make light work of planting some rare native trees in the Wellpark Reserve.
The welcome rain has encouraged the trees and the weeds to take off. As well as planting there will be some weeding to do too.

Francis Reserve
Update on 3rd May Weeding event
We had a weeding event on 3rd May. The area at the bottom of Francis Reserve has had a large Stormwater pipe upgrade.
The weeds have really got away with the new light. Morning Glory, bind weed, convulvulus, geraniums, jasmine. It was too much for us to tackle as a community group. We have requested help from Auckland Council Healthy Waters as part of the remediation work from the stormwater upgrade.
Healthy Waters – Emergency pipe renewal
The main driver for this project was to replace a pipe in poor condition that ran from Francis Reserve to Wellpark Reserve, passing under a dwelling at 28A. The pipe size was increased from 900 mm to 1500 mm in diameter to align with the upgrades completed in the Stanmore to Fife projects, which are located upstream of Wellpark. As well as this a restriction plate was installed in the Francis Reserve pipe as a flow reduction device, to manage capacity until the downstream network is upsized.
