Te RimuTahi – Social Dancing
Our new Ponsonby Civic Space, Te Rimutahi with its large covered wooden floor is perfect for dancing.
Imagine people dancing together – just like they do in Europe?
Music plays, people come and join in. We are taking from the tradition of European cities where public dancing in the square has been happening for centuries. We imagine people walking along the Ponsonby Rd would hear the music, see the dancing and join in.
What is Social Dancing?
We used to call this folk dancing but now the term, Social Dancing encompasses dance styles where the primary focus is on social interaction and enjoyment rather than performance. The emphasis is always on participation. Anybody can join in.
Examples of Social Dancing
Social dancing can include anything from ballroom and Latin dances to folk dances and contemporary styles.
- Folk Dancing: Balfolk with Michael Parementer. Michael is an expert in this style of French folk dancing. He has run social dancing events and classes
- Line Dancing
- Scottish Ceilidh
Social dancing offers numerous benefits, meeting people in the community, trying something new. It provides opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to connect, interact, and meet. We hope to attract residents as well as visitors to Ponsonby Rd.
We’d like to have weekly social dancing events at Te Rimutahi Civic Space.
Currently we are applying for funding so the dancing can be be free and we can cover our costs. Will keep you posted how we get on.
